About

Opus Science Collective (or OSC for short) is the musical pseudonym of me, Steve! I was born and raised in Birmingham (UK), where I studied Jazz and Blues piano, during which time I also taught myself a bit of guitar, bass, and harmonica, along with some basic recording techniques. I majored in Music Production from the University of Brighton in the early 2000s and now live on the South Coast of England.

I’m a composer, producer, arranger, mix-engineer, mastering-engineer, pianist, and music-teacher, with 20+ years of experience in both the freelance-musician and further-education sectors.

My musical inspirations come from far and wide, and I have a difficult time condensing in simple terms, or categorising what styles or genres of music motivate and inspire me the most.

Stylistically, I can be quite fickle and whimsical, flitting between lighthearted and energetic music one day, to slow and contemplative music the next. My back catalogue touches upon Experimental Electronica, Synthwave, Vaporwave, Funk, Ambient Music, Americana, and more. For my personal projects, I tend to make whatever I’m in the mood for on any given day (hence why my back-catalogue is a mixture of different style, ideas, and musical-aesthetics). For commission work however, I have sufficient discipline to knuckle down and work to a brief, making whatever the client requests.

If you’re new to me and my music, I’d recommend dipping into my genre-specific playlists on Spotify or YouTube, as they group together my stylistically similar music (as opposed to just delving into my most listened-to tracks on Spotify, as they’re a real mixed bag of genres).

With regards to commission work, previous clients include video-game developers for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles (soundtracks and sound effects), YouTubers with 1M+ subscribers (intro-themes and background music), Tokyo University and Japanese television (underscore/background music), numerous indie-video-game developers, smaller-scale YouTubers, Twitch streamers, and VTubers (intro themes and background music), animators (underscore), singer-songwriters (co-writing and production), and various other sound-bed and underscore tasks.

A word on AI: Recently I’ve received numerous queries about whether I am a real human, if my music is human-made, or if I use AI to make my music. Whilst I’ve historically tried to keep some sense of anonymity and avoided posting personal details about myself online, I’ve recently felt compelled to step out from behind the faceless avatar of OSC to reassure my listeners that I am indeed a person, making music, the old fashioned way (hence this "About" page). I have never used AI in my music production, and have no plans to. That’s not to say that I’m against others doing so, but it’s just not for me, and it’s not how I roll. I love nothing more than playing music, and spending my time sculpting sound with my own hands and ears.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch, and/or subscribe to my mailing list for the occasional email about new releases and such.

All the best,

Steve (OSC)
